Our Library Patron Saint

Our patron saint is Saint Job of Pochaev (1551-1651), “...Abbot and Wonderworker of Pochaev, a monastic and abbot of the Pochaev Lavra in Volhynia for fifty years, He defended Orthodoxy against the persecutions engendered in the Union of Brest. He was a quiet ascetic, yet a prolific writer who used the new printing press to teach and reach the faithful.*

He is commemorated on October 28, the date of his repose.  Therefore, our parish library was “re-opened” on October 28, 2018 in honor of Saint Job of Pochaev.
Through his prayers, may our parish library be used to teach and reach the Orthodox Christian faithful of our time!

Our parish library aims to edify, exhort and comfort readers of all ages with Orthodox Christian books and journals.
Located in the East classrooms hallway and a volunteer library helper is available most Sundays after Divine Liturgy to help patrons find and check out books.

Donate & Discover

Our parish library continues to grow—thanks to the generosity of the faithful and the grace of God! We’re excited to announce several new ways for you to participate in and support this ministry:

☦️ Ongoing Orthodox Book Donations

We joyfully continue to accept Orthodox Christian book donations from parishioners. If you have books in good condition that could edify others, we invite you to share them with the library. Books not added to our shelves may be included in the “used books” section to raise funds for Orthodox Detroit Outreach (ODO) or passed along to those in need.

📌 Donated books are subject to be declined due to condition, or subjects not directly related to Orthodox Christianity.  The parish priest will make final determination in these rare cases.

Used Books

☦️  Pay-What-You-Can Used Books

We are now offering used Orthodox books—extra copies we already have in the library—on a pay-what-you-can donation basis. Give what you’re able, and take what nourishes your soul.

To help guide giving, we suggest:

  • $5 donation for large/medium books
  • $2 donation for small books

📌 Donations are cash only and should be placed in the designated box near the display.

Used Icons

☦️ Pay-What-You-Can Used Icons

In addition, we plan to offer used Orthodox icons in the same spirit.

Therefore we are accepting used icons in good condition that could edify others in our parish at an affordable price.

📌 Just like the books, donated icons are subject to be declined due to condition or questionable canonicity.  Again, the parish priest will make final determination in these rare cases.

To help guide giving, we suggest:

  • $5 donation for large/medium icons
  • $2 donation for small icons

📌 Donations are cash only and should be placed in the designated box near the display.

Donation Proceeds Support Orthodox Detroit Outreach (ODO)

All funds donated for used books and icons will go to support Orthodox Detroit Outreach, serving Christ in our neighbors of Ss Peter and Paul Cathedral in Soutwest Detroit.

Past Donations

In December 2021, with Father Michael's blessing, the HTOC parish library donated 143 books to the Saint Nicholas parish library in Grand Rapids since they were in need of more books.
These were books of which we already had at least two or three copies on our shelves, thus an opportunity to share with our brethren across the state!
The librarian from Saint Nicholas was also quite grateful to our parish for the donation. Glory to God!
